Since assuming office in 2019, Mai Mala Buni has led an administration largely defined by reconstruction, recovery, and inclusive development. Governing a state that had endured years of insurgency and infrastructural damage, his leadership has focused on rebuilding critical sectors, restoring livelihoods, and laying a sustainable foundation for long-term growth. Across health, agriculture, infrastructure, education, and social welfare, his administration has recorded notable interventions that continue to shape the trajectory of Yobe State.
One of the most significant pillars of Buni’s administration has been the revitalization of the healthcare system. Recognizing the devastation caused by years of conflict, the government embarked on widespread construction and rehabilitation of healthcare facilities, particularly primary healthcare centres across rural and urban communities. These facilities were equipped with laboratories, maternity wards, and staff quarters to ensure round-the-clock service delivery.
In addition, the administration introduced policies aimed at expanding access to affordable healthcare. Free or subsidized healthcare programs targeting vulnerable populations, alongside decentralized drug distribution systems, have improved access to essential medicines and services.
The state also gained recognition for its performance in primary healthcare, winning a $500,000 Primary Healthcare Leadership Challenge award in the North-East—an indication of improved service delivery and innovation in public health management.
Beyond infrastructure, the recruitment and training of healthcare workers strengthened the sector’s human capacity, while maternal and child health programs contributed to reducing preventable deaths and improving overall health outcomes.
Agriculture, the backbone of Yobe’s economy, has experienced a deliberate revival under Buni’s leadership. The administration introduced policies to support farmers with subsidized fertilizers, improved seeds, and modern farming tools, thereby boosting productivity and food security.
Irrigation schemes and extension services were expanded to support year-round farming, while targeted interventions empowered rural farmers and enhanced the agricultural value chain. These initiatives helped revive farming activities in communities previously disrupted by insecurity.
In addition, the government implemented agricultural loan schemes and distributed farming inputs to thousands of beneficiaries, strengthening livelihoods and encouraging agribusiness development.
The administration’s efforts in agricultural empowerment earned national recognition, including awards for excellence in supporting farmers and boosting rural economies.
Governor Buni’s administration has made visible strides in infrastructure development, particularly in urban renewal and rural connectivity. Roads in major towns such as Damaturu have been constructed and rehabilitated, easing transportation and facilitating commerce. Drainage systems and street lighting projects have improved environmental conditions and enhanced security.
In rural areas, the construction of feeder roads has significantly improved access to markets, healthcare, and education. Water supply projects, including boreholes and sanitation schemes, have reduced water scarcity and improved living standards, particularly for women and children.
Housing projects, including mass housing schemes, were also initiated to address shelter needs, especially for internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by insurgency.
Education has remained a cornerstone of the administration’s long-term development agenda. The government invested heavily in building and renovating schools, providing classrooms, laboratories, and learning materials. Teacher recruitment and training programs were also implemented to improve the quality of education delivery.
Scholarship schemes and financial support for students further expanded access to education, while efforts to make schooling more accessible helped increase enrollment, especially in underserved communities.
Governor Buni’s administration has implemented several empowerment programs targeting youth and women as part of its inclusive development strategy. Skills acquisition centres were established to equip young people with vocational and entrepreneurial skills, while financial support initiatives helped small businesses grow.
Women, particularly those in vulnerable communities, benefited from empowerment schemes, access to microfinance, and livelihood support programs. Humanitarian and social intervention initiatives also provided relief materials, food support, and startup capital to vulnerable households, helping to reduce poverty and improve resilience.
Given Yobe’s history of displacement due to insurgency, the administration prioritized social welfare and humanitarian support. Thousands of internally displaced persons were resettled, with housing, livelihood support, and reintegration programs helping them rebuild their lives.
Food security interventions, including distribution of food items and nutrition support to vulnerable populations, further demonstrated the government’s commitment to social protection and poverty alleviation.
A critical but often understated achievement of Buni’s administration has been the restoration of peace and stability across many parts of the state. Through collaboration with security agencies and community leaders, previously volatile areas have witnessed improved security, enabling economic and social activities to resume.
The administration also maintained fiscal discipline, ensured regular payment of salaries and pensions, and prioritized projects with direct impact on citizens, thereby strengthening public trust and boosting local economic activity.
The administration of Mai Mala Buni represents a significant phase in the rebuilding and transformation of Yobe State. Through strategic investments in healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, education, and social welfare, the government has addressed both immediate needs and long-term development goals.
While challenges remain, particularly in sustaining growth and consolidating peace, the legacy projects and reforms of this administration have positioned Yobe State on a path of recovery, resilience, and inclusive progress.
